THEME: REGIONAL ECONOMIC GROWTH AND STABILITY
As part of the Institute of Chartered Accountants-Ghana’s, (ICAG) week-long celebration which focused on the theme, “Regional Economic Growth and Stability,” a 2-day conference was held during which seasoned speakers and discussants made presentations on various aspects of the theme.
The Institute considered this theme relevant because it believes that the key to Africa’s sustained economic growth is through regional integration. The importance of regional integration as a means of supporting Africa’s economic development has long been recognized by African leaders. This is evidenced by the existence of various regional groups like the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC). Despite the multiplicity of groupings, regional integration in Africa has been plagued with a litany of missed targets and objectives.
